It is caused by the organism Calymmatobacterium granulomatis. Granuloma inguinale is usually transmitted through sexual intercourse. Granuloma inguinale is rare and usually occurs in people living in tropical and subtropical areas such as Southeast India, Guyana, and New Guinea. Granuloma inguinale occurs more in males and homosexuals are at a greater risk of developing it. What are the symptoms of Granuloma Inguinale? The most common symptoms of granuloma inguinale are: lumps or blisters in the genital area. As time passes, the blister becomes a slowly enlarging open sore. Symptoms usually appear within 80 days of exposure. How is Granuloma Inguinale transmitted? Granuloma Inguinale is spread by sexual contact with an infected individual. It can be spread from one person to another as long as the infected person remains untreated and bacteria from lesions are present. To decrease your risk of contracting granuloma iguinale, Limit your number of sex partners. Use a condom. Wash your genitals after sexual intercourse. How is granuloma inguinale diagnosed? After a physical examination of the genital area, your doctor may perform the following tests: Biopsy of lesion to provide tissue for microscopic examination Culture of tissue sample Once infected with Granuloma Inguinale, will the person be immune to further breakouts? No. What are the treatment options for Granuloma Inguinale? Your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic that will cure the infection. The most common antibiotics prescribed are: Tetracycline or doxycycline, Sulfamethoxazole, Gentamicin, Streptomycin, Ciprofloxacin, and Erythromycin. It takes about 3 to 5 weeks for total healing. Complications of Granuloma Inguinale If left untreated, granuloma inguinale can cause serious complications. It can cause extensive destruction of genital organs.
